With the nights drawing in here in the northern hemisphere, IFFR UK finished its 2024 summer season of one day meetings in late September. These meetings are a great way for both the pilot and non-pilot members to join in with our aviation fun and fellowship.
Over the summer we’ve headed south to the Isle of Wight and north to Scotland. In the second half of the season, we’ve visited 3 museums each telling a different part of the great British aviation story. On each occasion, we have had fantastic private guided tours for the 20+ members attending.
In July we headed west to the South Wales Air Museum based at RAF St Athan, near Cardiff.
In August we met centrally, at the ever delightful Wellesbourne Mountford airfield near Coventry. We were able to get up close to Vulcan XM655, to see it powered up and controls and bomb bay doors tested, and to go up inside the cockpit!
We ended the season with our September meeting at the De Havilland Museum just north of London. This is located in the grounds of Salisbury Hall, the country retreat where Sir Winston Churchill wrote many of his famous wartime speeches. We even witnessed the Merlin engine of a De Havilland Mosquito which had crashed in 1943 running once again!
Three great days of flying and fellowship – and the planning for 2025 has already started. So, if you are a Rotarian with an interest in aviation – do send us a message: our casual one-day meetings are a great way to try IFFR out!
And don’t forget – our Christmas Lunch at the RAF Club will be on 11th December.
